4.1 billion devices? Bring it on.

Growth is good, but uncontrolled growth can be a recipe for disaster. And today’s staggering growth of mobile subscribers and their seemingly insatiable demand for bandwidth has proved daunting for the service provider industry. Meanwhile, the concurrent explosion of mobile devices in the enterprise space poses a similar challenge to the corporate network. It has brought us to a crisis point.
At current course and speed, without serious innovation in how we provide IT and managed services, the CAPEX and OPEX required to meet demand is on track to surpass revenue in the next three to five years. The cost of building the network, combined with the labor, training and management costs to keep the network up and running, will strip the profit from the service provider.
Announcing Junos® Trio, the remarkable silicon at the heart of our MX series. This processor, designed and built by us, has the revolutionary ability to uniquely address the high throughput, high reliability and high demand requirements that are typical in the service provider and managed service environment. It’s a never-before-possible capability we have named 3D Scaling, because it allows the network to scale simultaneously across three dimensions—subscribers, network speed and application type.
3D scaling brings intelligence to the edge, automatically identifying user demand based on who the user is, applications being used and conditions across the network and then providing the appropriate level of service. Without 3D scaling, you had a choice between over-provisioning your network to meet anticipated peak demand, or taking the risk of under-serving the network and under-delivering on service agreements.
Furthermore, you had to be something of a mind reader, anticipating 18 months in advance where the future network was going and building out a custom network to meet this anticipated need. But a Junos-based solution changes this dynamic.
Junos, with its origins in the carrier space, is an open and secure platform built on a single source code base and that follows a single, predictable release train. This has enabled an ecosystem of robust third-party development—literally hundreds of smart, innovative companies have begun building and deploying extensible solutions on the Junos platform. This modular approach gives the carrier a seamless and more affordable way to roll out applications, one that requires less testing and less maintenance. In the new network, the businesses that thrive will be those that tap into the synergy of this community of open development and shared knowledge.
Another piece of good news for service providers: The technology to implement billing based on bandwidth use has also arrived. With it, you can charge a premium to customers who want to pay more for priority access, or to application providers who want to ensure a smooth and reliable delivery of their product. In one step, it gets you out of the commodity business and back into selling an experience.
The challenges of today’s mobile environment are new. The solutions can’t be old.
The new network is here. And it’s running Junos.
